Ah, we missed each other by a few years in Tokyo! Yeah, I grew up making my own bed (always), eating dinner at 5 and using a lot less toilet paper than I do now. Have you ever read a book called "Military Brats?" Here's a link on Amazon. You would enjoy it. The author was inspired by Pat Conroy's "The Great Santini."

Wow, Gil--Jean Wilson informed me about this last night. I am so very sorry to hear this, though I agree with you: there's been a long history of friction between the US military installations and the Japanese. My father was stationed at Kadena AFB from 1968-1971; I remember coming back from Christmas vacation to find that my middle school classroom burned down due to a protest by the Okinawans of a rape.

(BTW--I had no idea you were a military brat too. We lived off-base in Yokota and flew out of Tachikawa.)

I worked at Yokota AB from 1976 to 1999 when I retired. After retirement, my wife and I continued living near the base for 5 additional years; thus, we are quite familar with the area where the crime occurred. We did have incidents where dependents threw stones from inside the base at the Japanese homes on the other side of the fence and shoplifted off-base, but nothing as dangerous as the recent case. That said, the overwhelming majority of dependents as well as active duty personnel are fine representatives of our country, but unfortunately there are always a few rotten apples. I agree with Simon that these individuals should be tried as adults.

Gil, you're not alone on this. I too feel that these teens acted heinously in stringing the rope across a road.

What did they think would happen when they tied the rope across the road? They deserve to be tried as adults.
